How do I work?

Independent if it is an online session or face-to-face, I will provide you with a safe space to go for deep research on yourself. Your pace is respected and we will go as far as you are willing. There is no need for previous experience with art making. This is an environment free from judgment and labels. After your creation, I will invite you to talk about the process, the memories, and what the creation is talking to you. I will share with you what I can see, describe it and bring different perspectives to the conversation.

You can see below a short list of elements that often take rol in the sessions:

Therapeutic Relationship

In an art therapeutic setting, the relationship between the client and the therapist serves as a cornerstone for healing and growth. Unlike traditional talk therapy, art therapy incorporates the expressive language of art to facilitate communication and exploration of emotions, experiences, and inner conflicts. The therapeutic relationship provides a safe and supportive space where clients feel accepted, understood, and valued. Through this bond, clients can explore their creativity, express themselves authentically, and delve into their subconscious, fostering self-awareness and insight. The trusting and empathetic connection between the client and therapist enables the exploration of difficult emotions and experiences, leading to transformative healing and personal growth. As the relationship deepens and evolves, clients often find solace, empowerment, and a renewed sense of self amidst their artistic expressions.

Early Experience

Our past experiences, especially those from pivotal moments in our early years, have the potential to shape our present selves. These influences may operate on varying levels of awareness and may require time to surface. These formative experiences often manifest not only as memories but also as underlying feelings and sensations that continue to impact our daily lives. Acknowledging and embracing these aspects of ourselves, which may be seeking acknowledgment, in a supportive and compassionate manner, can pave the way for newfound liberation and a sense of completeness.

Immigration bereavement / Grief

For individuals navigating the loss of their homeland, culture, or loved ones due to immigration, art therapy offers a safe and supportive space to process their grief, identity struggles, and cultural adjustments. Through artistic expression, individuals can externalize their emotions, memories, and experiences, facilitating the exploration and integration of their immigration-related losses. Art therapy provides a non-verbal means of communication, allowing clients to express the nuances of their grief and cultural displacement that may be difficult to articulate verbally. Additionally, art-making offers a sense of empowerment and agency, enabling individuals to reclaim aspects of their identity and heritage amidst the challenges of immigration. Through the therapeutic relationship and creative process, clients can navigate their immigration bereavement journey with compassion, resilience, and a renewed sense of connection to self and culture.

Trauma

Art provides a tangible outlet for the expression of feelings that may be difficult to verbalize, allowing for a deeper understanding and processing of traumatic events. The creative process itself can serve as a form of catharsis, enabling individuals to release pent-up emotions and reclaim a sense of agency over their narrative. Under the guidance of a trained art therapist, clients can navigate their trauma journey at their own pace, gradually unraveling layers of pain and finding moments of resilience and healing amidst the chaos. Through art therapy, individuals can cultivate resilience, restore a sense of self-worth, and embark on a journey towards reclaiming their inner strength and vitality.

Here and Now

In art therapy, the concept of "here and now" holds significant importance as it grounds individuals in the present moment, fostering awareness and connection to their immediate experiences. Engaging in the creative process encourages clients to focus on the present moment, allowing them to channel their thoughts, feelings, and sensations into their artwork. By immersing themselves in the act of creation, clients can temporarily set aside worries about the past or anxieties about the future, cultivating a sense of mindfulness and presence.

Moreover, the "here and now" aspect of art therapy enables clients to explore their current emotional state and lived experiences through the artistic process. Whether it's painting, drawing, sculpting, or other forms of expression, individuals have the opportunity to externalize their internal world, making their thoughts and emotions tangible and visible. This tangible expression of the "here and now" facilitates introspection and self-reflection, allowing clients to gain insights into their emotions, behaviours, and underlying patterns.

Additionally, the focus on the "here and now" in art therapy promotes authenticity and spontaneity in creative expression. Clients are encouraged to trust their instincts and respond intuitively to the materials at hand, allowing for a genuine and uninhibited exploration of self-expression. Through this process, individuals can uncover hidden aspects of themselves, confront unresolved issues, and develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and authenticity.

Overall, the emphasis on the "here and now" in art therapy serves as a powerful tool for personal growth and transformation. By grounding individuals in the present moment, fostering self-awareness, and promoting authentic expression, art therapy facilitates healing and empowerment, enabling clients to navigate their inner landscape with greater clarity, resilience, and insight.

Creativity

Creativity stimulates cognitive functioning, encouraging problem-solving, flexibility, and innovation. Additionally, participating in creative pursuits can build self-esteem and confidence, providing individuals with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Overall, integrating creativity into daily life promotes mental resilience, emotional well-being, and a sense of joy and vitality.
